Thomas Vernon Hannaford, Jr.
Thomas Vernon Hannaford, Jr., 84, of Savannah, Georgia passed away on July 16, 2009. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina on February 8, 1925 to Mr. Thomas Vernon Hannaford, Sr. and Mrs. Lois Johnson Hannaford. Tom graduated from St. Andrew's High School in Charleston. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and attended the Citadel as a veteran student. On June 19, 1948, Tom married Etta Mae Huffman of Charleston. In 1965, Tom and Etta moved their family to Savannah, GA. Tom owned and managed Central Opticians until his retirement.
Tom is survived by his wife, Etta, and their three children: Thomas Vernon Hannaford, III and wife Carolyn of Savannah, GA; Donna Hannaford Nickerson and husband Dr. William J. Nickerson of Sugar Land, Texas; and Scott Keith Hannaford and wife Ruby of Fresno, CA. Tom also had seven grandchildren and one great grandson: Christine Hannaford Connor, husband Scott and son Matthew of Atlanta, GA; Holly Diane Hannaford, John Thomas Hannaford both of Savannah, GA; Bryan Keith Hannaford, Sean Michael Hannaford, Phillip Thomas Hannaford and Daniel Scott Hannaford all of Fresno, CA. Tom also leaves behind three sisters: Mrs. Samuel J. Huffman Lois of Seattle, WA. Mrs. Edward J. Redgate Patricia of Hilton Head Island, SC and Mrs. Robert A. Daniel Lucia of Charleston, SC.
Tom was a gifted artist and an avid bridge player. He also enjoyed tennis, model airplanes and wood carving. Tom and Etta were long time members of Independent Presbyterian Church in Savannah.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 from 5pm to 7pm at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors on Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah. Services will be held at Independent Presbyterian Church on Bull St. in Savannah on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at 10:00am. Burial will be at 3:30pm the same day at Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, SC.
In lieu of sending flowers, anyone wishing to remember Tom may send donations to Boys Farm, P.O. Box 713, Newberry, SC 29108 or Independent Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. 9266, Savannah, GA 31412.
